If you are a single commuting girl that means that you have a lot of time to think about your life while you are on that train, that is late every other day, that is packed and hot and stuffy…
In order to help you to stop thinking sad thoughts, I would advise to search the Internet for some interesting articles boosting self-esteem. Print them out and take on the train with you. Whenever you feel down, get those printouts and read in order to help yourself to feel better. It’s obvious that positive thinking creates a positive atmosphere, whereas negative and pessimistic thinking, drags us back into misery.
You can also find some interesting sayings or quotations and read them from time to time. If you have a meeting and you need something clever to say, go through your list of interesting quotes and you might find something useful that you can make use of during that presentation of yours. If you don’t find anything worthy you would at least spend your time reading something inspiring and gain some knowledge.
Commuting is the best way to find time to read all the books you normally do not have time to read. For example, if you’ve always wanted to cover European history, buy something as simple and easy to read as “The complete idiot’s guide to European history”. It would help you to kill some journey time and get some useful information. First of all history can be very exciting, and second, you might use your newly acquired knowledge when you need to impress somebody special or keep conversation going. If you are not into history, try reading biographies, memoirs and autobiographies. It’s another source of interesting, useful information that is worth reading on the train.
If you are tired, or sleepy, you can read a detective story. It normally helps to get involved into a story line to such an extent that you forget about a real life around you. Choose somebody famous, best selling authors. It does not normally mean that the best selling item is the best read, but it’s better than to go into a bookshop and gamble what kind of book to buy. (e.g. Agatha Christie, Kathy Reichs, etc.)
The last book I read and enjoyed was “Getting rid of Matthew” by Jane Fallon. This book is very easy to read. It’s funny, amusing, invigorating. You feel sorry for the main protagonist, following her misadventures. But at the same time, all the examples come from real life that’s why it’s kind of easy to believe in everything what she’s going through. For example, when the girl went home, sat in front of the TV, watching boring and depressing soap operas, eating dinner on her own, it did remind me of my own experience.
Next book I enjoyed reading was Toby Young’s “How to lose friends and alienate people”. It’s hilarious. Absolutely hilarious, rude and egocentric, but entertaining. That’s what you need when you are standing on the jam-packed train squeezed in between other passengers and a door.
Another book that you absolutely must read while you are on the train is “A short history of tractors in Ukrainian”, by Marina Lewycka. This book is absolutely fantastic read for a single commuting girl! First of all it’s funny. It’s set in England. It narrates about an average family from Ukrainian background. It talks about the history of this particular family and a little bit about Ukrainian history from the perceptive of this family. Anyone can associate themselves with the protagonists of the book, because their lives are so “normal”, so like-all-the-other-people’s-lives. This book makes you totally forget about the life around you. When I read it, believe it or not, but I could not wait till I got on the train. This book turned my exhausting twice a day journeys into an exciting experience.
