Nowadays more and more people choose online dating websites. Why is it so? Why do we prefer meeting new people online to meeting people through friends or colleagues, in clubs and bars, on holidays? Is it because we want to meet somebody special and do not know where to start? Is it because we fear that we might be rejected if we go on a date? Is online dating another way to know a person before meeting him or her in person? Or is it because we simply need somebody to listen to what we’ve got to say?
First of all, I believe people prefer online dating because it’s the easiest way to meet people without difficulties. The greatest thing about online dating is that we are invisible, people we are talking to cannot see us if we do not want them to. The second great thing is that we can be whatever we want to be; we can obtain any shape or personality, we can be brave and easy-going, smart and talkative, funny and intelligent. We do not need to worry about our appearances; we do not need to worry that our voice might tremble and that we might say the most inappropriate things at the most inappropriate time. There is no need to worry that we have nothing to reply, because if we struggle, we might simply go to google.com and find an answer to any tricky question or reply using an interesting saying or expression. Online dating is stress free.
Is our society getting more shy and timid? Are these online dating websites becoming more popular because we simply cannot be bothered to put effort in when meeting somebody we fancy? Or is it another way of expressing ourselves? Do we use online chatting to share our thoughts that we would not dare to share with people we know? A fascination with online dating websites reminds me of an old fashioned means of communication between people. Some time ago it was very popular to write letters to friends, loved ones and relatives. You did not even have to live too far away from each other to send a letter. That was a normal way of communication between all the people, as they did not have telephones yet. Young people, who were in love, wrote each other long letters, talked about their hopes and their dreams, about their expectations. It was done in order to get to know each other a little bit better before making that important step forward. Using online dating services we basically do the same thing. The only difference is that we use computers instead of pen and paper. We chat, exchange information, talk about our feelings, and get to know each other better through this virtual communication. Isn’t it a step back in time? Are we not becoming Victorian ladies and gentlemen once again?
A good thing about online communication is the ability to state one’s true thoughts and feelings. You can express yourself and if the person you chat to shares you views, you stand a good chance of meeting that special person you’ve been dreaming about. We choose online dating services to meet new people because it gives us a good chance to show the best qualities we posses. It gives us time to know each other better. It allows us to practice our communication and flirting skills and share our thoughts with our virtual friends that have got that unique ability to listen.
